Public education and the programs and agencies which serve it must be reinvented, not merely reformed, in order to meet the new challenge of all kids, new skills.

At the invitation of State Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto, state legislators and business leaders, Tony has made numerous trips to Hawaii in the last several years. He has conducted day-long conferences on systemic change for teams from every elementary and secondary school in the state and has worked with Complex Area Superintendents on improving instructional leadership, as well as with a team of K-12 principals in South Kona. (See Tony's recent Education Week Commentary, "Rigor on Trial" for a brief description of his work with these principals.) Tony was also invited to address state legislators and was a featured speaker at the 2004 and 2006 Hawaii Executive conference.

Tony and his colleagues at the Change Leadership Group are developing an important leadership demonstration project in Hawaii, to begin in the fall of 2006 and which will continue through 2009.

Since the launch of their Education Programs Division in 1999, Tony has served as Senior Advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  He consulted to the foundation in the development of their original business plan, reviewed foundation strategies and proposals, created and supervised a network of district "coaches," and provided direct technical assistance to foundation grantees.  His current title at the foundation is Senior Fellow, and he continues to work with the Education Program Director and Program Officers in a number of capacities

Known for his expertise on high school "reinvention," Tony was a keynote speaker and panelist for the first United States Department of Education Small Learning Communities National Conference.  he has since been invited to speak in school districts establishing Small Learning Communities in a number of states, including North Carolina, New Mexico, and Texas.
